Make strikethrough text
Tap Copy next to a style, then paste it anywhere. Some apps and fonts may not show every symbol, and screen readers may read styled text poorly.
How does a strikethrough text generator work without a strikethrough button?
The tool follows every letter with a combining line character from Unicode, such as the long stroke overlay, so the line is part of the text itself and travels with it when you copy and paste. No formatting is involved, which is why it works in plain-text boxes.
Word processors strike text through with formatting, and that formatting is lost when you paste into a plain field. Combining characters solve this. Each one is a real character that attaches to the letter before it. The long stroke overlay draws a line through the middle of that letter, and the short stroke overlay draws a shorter one.
Spaces are left alone, so a crossed-out sentence is a row of struck letters with open gaps, the same as you would get in a document. The characters behind the effect are the same ones used for accents and marks in many languages, so any app that handles accents has at least a fair chance of drawing them.
Some people look for a strike through text generator, written as three words, and mean the same tool. Others search for crossed out text copy and paste, and the Copy button on each row does exactly that. The rows differ in how the line through text looks, from a plain line to wavy and bold.
Where does strikethrough text render, and where does it not?
It generally shows in social bios, comments, chats, notes and most web forms that accept Unicode, but a few fields remove combining marks, and some fonts draw the line at a slightly different height. Always preview in a draft, because every app has its own rules.
Where an app has its own strikethrough markup, that is usually the cleaner choice. Several chat and note apps turn a tilde or two around a word into a struck word, and document editors have a strikethrough button and shortcut. This generator earns its place where none of that exists: profile fields, usernames that allow symbols, image captions, plain-text email and any box that strips formatting.
| Situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| Bio or profile field | Generated text from this page |
| Word processor or spreadsheet | The built-in strikethrough command |
| Chat app with markup support | The app's own markup syntax |
| Plain-text email or form | Generated text, tested first |
Which strikethrough text generator style should I choose?
Use the first row for a standard line through the middle. The short stroke is lighter and easier to read, double is emphatic, wavy is playful, slash looks hand-drawn, and bold and italic rows combine a letter style with the line. Underline adds a second line below.
The best row depends on what the crossed-out words mean. A price that has dropped looks right with the plain long stroke, which readers recognize at a glance. A joke or a retracted statement works well with the wavy or slash rows, which feel informal. Use bold when the crossed-out part is important, for example in a to-do list where finished tasks should stay visible.
Short stroke and long stroke can look nearly alike at small sizes, so compare them on a phone. If a row seems to float above the text, another font will usually draw it better, so try the same text on a second device.
How do I cross out text for edits, jokes and price drops?
Common uses are marking old prices, showing a correction with humor, finished items in a list, ironic captions, and a plain look of a cancelled plan or idea. It works best on short phrases next to normal text.
Try a pair: the crossed-out word followed by the corrected word, as in a sale line or a joke caption. In a checklist, strike finished items and leave pending ones plain. In a bio, strike a past job title beside the current one. Keep each struck run short, since long crossed-out passages are hard to read.
If your struck phrase also needs capitalization cleaned up first, run it through the title case converter. For a more decorative look on the same words, pair it with italic text or the fancy text generator.
Does strikethrough text work for screen readers?
Not reliably. Screen readers usually ignore combining line characters and read the plain words, so a listener may hear the crossed-out price as if it were still valid. Add a plain word such as was or old next to important struck text.
The visual message of a line through text is lost without sight. If a struck phrase changes the meaning of your post, say in plain words what it means, for example "was 40, now 25". Avoid using struck text for important corrections on its own. This page labels each preview with your plain text for assistive technology, but pasted text does not keep that label. You can check the length of your final text with the word counter.
Frequently asked questions
Is this real strikethrough or just a look-alike?
It is made of genuine Unicode combining characters placed after each letter, so the line is part of the text and survives copy and paste. It is not formatting, so it behaves like any other characters in a field.
Why is the line at a different height in some apps?
The line is drawn by the viewer's font, and fonts place the stroke slightly differently. If one row looks too high or low in your app, try the short stroke or slash row, or paste into another app to compare.
Can I strike through only some words?
Yes. Convert the phrase you want crossed out, copy it, and paste it between normal words in your own text. Any plain text around it stays as you typed it.
Does it work on numbers and symbols?
Yes. The combining line attaches to digits, letters and most symbols, so prices and dates can be crossed out. Spaces are skipped, and very unusual characters may draw the line less cleanly.
Will search or copy still work on struck text?
Each letter is still there with an extra mark after it, so the text can be selected and copied. Search treats it as a different string than the plain word, which means a plain search might not match it.
How do I remove the strikethrough later?
Retype the words, or paste the text back into the box here and replace it with plain characters. The tool has no undo for pasted text, so keep a plain copy of anything you may want to edit.
Is the text sent to a server?
No. The line characters are added in your browser, and nothing you type is transmitted or stored. There is no account or sign-up, and closing or refreshing the tab clears the box, so nothing is kept.
Are there length limits?
The tool accepts up to 300 characters. Each struck letter carries an extra invisible character, so some apps with strict limits count the result as longer than the visible text.
