Gothic text generator: make gothic text

Try:

Tap Copy next to a style, then paste it anywhere. Some apps and fonts may not show every symbol, and screen readers may read styled text poorly.

What is gothic text, and why does it look like old English?

Gothic text is blackletter, the angular, heavy lettering used in medieval manuscripts and old newspaper mastheads, and Unicode includes it as the Fraktur alphabet. People often call it old English text, though the script is really German-style blackletter, and this tool turns your letters into it.

Blackletter developed in Europe as a compact, dense hand that scribes could write quickly. Printers later adopted it, and the style is still common on diplomas, beer labels, metal band logos and tattoo lettering, which is why it feels both ancient and rebellious.

Unicode carries two sets of this alphabet in its mathematical symbols: a regular weight and a bold weight. A few capitals, such as C, H, I, R and Z, live in a separate older block, and the tool takes care of that substitution so your word never has holes in it.

What are the five styles of this fraktur text generator?

Fraktur is the standard thin blackletter, bold fraktur is the heavier version for headings, spaced fraktur adds air between letters, underlined fraktur adds a line below, and shadowed fraktur adds faint marks for a haunted edge. Pick the one that fits the space and mood.

    StyleWhat it addsSuits

Bold frakturThicker strokes, easier to read smallTitles, clan tags, logos
Spaced frakturA space between every letterShort banners and labels
Underlined frakturA combining line under each letterHeadings that need a rule

Spaced text takes up much more room, so keep it to a word or two.

How do I use the gothic text generator for a name, bio or username?

Type your text, pick the row you like, press Copy and paste it into a game name, profile, server title or document. The box starts with sample words, and the list updates as you type. Capitals look best, so start names with a capital letter.

    1. Type a name or phrase of 20 characters or fewer for the best effect.
    2. Compare the rows. Bold fraktur tends to stay readable at small sizes.
    3. Tap Copy and paste.
    4. If the target field rejects it, try the plain fraktur row, or a shorter phrase.

Blackletter works best on a short line, since long lowercase runs are tiring to read. For friendlier flowing letters try cursive text, and for a more general menu of looks head to the fancy text generator.

Is gothic text hard to read, and how can I keep it clear?

Yes, blackletter is harder to read than ordinary type, especially in lowercase and at small sizes. Keep gothic text to names, headings and short phrases, use the bold row, and avoid all capitals, which look cluttered in this alphabet.

Traditional printers set long gothic text with care for exactly this reason. Capital letters are ornate and some pairs look alike, for example the capital I and J forms. Mixed case, short lines and generous spacing around the text will serve you better than size alone.

As a rule of thumb, if someone must read it quickly, such as a price, an address or a warning, set it in ordinary letters. Gothic is for names and mood. You can measure how long your line is with the word counter before you style it.

Where does gothic text work, and where does it fail?

Gothic text pastes into most bios, chats, documents and design tools, but fields that allow only plain letters will reject it, and some older fonts lack the alphabet and show empty boxes. It also stays invisible to anyone searching for the plain spelling.

Because the letters are separate Unicode symbols, search engines and in-app search treat them as different words from the plain ones. A band name in fraktur will not be found by a search for the plain name, so include the plain name somewhere nearby.

Accessibility needs the same thought. Screen readers may announce each letter as mathematical fraktur small letter, which is slow and confusing. Keep gothic text decorative, and put anything essential in standard characters. This page labels each preview with your plain text, but pasted text does not carry that label.

    Frequently asked questions

Is an old English text generator the same as a gothic text generator?

In everyday use, yes. People say old English text for blackletter, though the lettering is a medieval European style and not the language. The tool outputs Unicode fraktur and bold fraktur, which cover the look most people mean.

Can I use gothic letters for a tattoo design?

You can use the preview as a rough guide for the word and its shape, but a tattoo artist should draw the final lettering by hand, because Unicode characters are tuned for screens and spacing, and real blackletter lettering has many variants.

    What is a blackletter generator?

A blackletter generator turns the letters you type into Unicode fraktur characters, a medieval angular alphabet. The result is plain text, not an installed font, so it pastes into most bios, chats and documents. Capitals look best, and bold fraktur stays readable at small sizes.

    Does gothic text have numbers?

Regular fraktur has no digits of its own, so numbers stay as you typed them. Bold fraktur borrows bold digits, which look upright rather than blackletter. The fancy text generator offers more digit styles.

Will gothic text work in Discord, Instagram and games?

Many accept it in names, bios and messages. Some usernames, server settings and in-game name fields limit characters to plain letters and numbers. Test in a draft or sign-up preview before you rely on it.

Why do I see boxes instead of letters?

The device has no font containing the fraktur characters, so it draws empty boxes. This is more common on older systems and some embedded browsers. Try another device, or switch to a different style.

Is a gothic font generator the same as a text generator?

Mostly yes. A gothic font generator like this one does not install a font. It swaps each letter for a fraktur symbol from Unicode, so the style travels with the text when you paste it. Real font files can look different and need installing.

Is this tool free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no account, and the conversion happens in your browser. The page makes no network request with what you type, and the text disappears when you close the tab.
