Upside Down Text Generator: Flip Text Online
This upside down text generator lets you type a line and read it flipped over, with the letters turned around and the order reversed so it works when you tilt your head. Backwards and same-order versions sit just below.

Flip text: upside down text generator
Tap Copy next to a style, then paste it anywhere. Some apps and fonts may not show every symbol, and screen readers may read styled text poorly.
How does a text flipper make upside down text?
Upside down text swaps each letter for a Unicode character that looks like that letter turned 180 degrees, then reverses the order of the letters, so the line reads correctly if you rotate your screen. It is a trick of look-alike symbols, not a rotation, so the output is plain copyable text.
To turn a word over, two things must happen. Each character must be replaced by something that looks like its upside-down form (an a becomes ɐ, a y becomes ʎ) and the whole line has to run right to left, because turning a page on its head also swaps the ends. The tool does both in one step. Lines you separate with Enter are flipped one by one and keep their order.
The symbols come from several parts of Unicode, mostly phonetic letters and a few math or Latin-extended characters, which is why this style is a patchwork and not a font.
What is the difference between upside down, flipped and backwards text?
Upside down text flips the letters and reverses their order, flipped letters in original order only turns each letter, and backwards text only reverses the order and keeps normal letters. The first reads right when you turn the screen around. The other two are useful for puzzles and wordplay.
| Row | Letters | Order | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upside down | Turned over | Reversed | The classic 180 degree look |
| Flipped letters, original order | Turned over | Unchanged | Decorative text that keeps its reading direction |
| Backwards | Normal | Reversed | Mirror-style puzzles, palindromes |
If you only need a plain reversal of a long passage, the backwards row gives you that, and nothing else changes.
Why do some letters look wrong when flipped?
Some letters look the same upside down, such as o, s, x and z, and a few capitals have only an approximate flipped form in Unicode, so they may look slightly off. A handful of lookalikes like the flipped Q or the flipped R come from unusual blocks that not every font draws well.
For letters such as l, o, s, x, z, H, I, N, O, S and X, the best upside-down form is the letter itself, so they stay unchanged. Other flipped forms are borrowed from the International Phonetic Alphabet and mathematical symbols. The number 6 and 9 swap places, and punctuation such as question and exclamation marks becomes the inverted Spanish marks.
If a flipped letter shows as a box, the device font lacks it. Try the same text on another browser or switch the row. You can also pair flipped text with small caps for a quieter look.
Where can I use upside down letters copy and paste?
You can paste upside down text into most chats, captions, bios and documents that accept Unicode, using it for jokes, puzzles, reveals and playful posts. Each app decides what to display, so test in a draft first. Avoid it for anything people need to read quickly or read aloud.
Fun uses: a hidden joke at the end of a caption, a "flip your phone" tease, a puzzle for friends, or a playful reply. Keep it short. Long upside-down paragraphs force readers to tilt their heads and are very hard for screen readers to speak. If your message needs to stay clear, put the plain version beside it, or choose a gentler style such as italic text.
Planning a post with an exact length? The word counter shows characters and words before you paste.
Is upside down text accessible?
No. Upside down text is hard to read and screen readers often announce the odd symbols by name or skip them, so use it for fun and not for information. The row labels on this page expose your plain text to assistive technology, but pasted text in another app will not carry that label.
Never put a phone number, price, address or instruction upside down without the plain version nearby. Readers with dyslexia or low vision can find rotated text difficult, even when the symbols display correctly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I type upside down text on my keyboard?
Not directly, because the characters are scattered across Unicode. A generator like this one maps each normal letter to a look-alike and reverses the order, so you get a copyable result without searching for symbols.
Does upside down text work on Instagram, Snapchat or WhatsApp?
You can paste it into most text fields, since it is regular Unicode. Each app decides how to display symbols, and rules can change, so paste into a draft or a chat with yourself before you post.
Is there a backwards text generator on this page?
Yes. The Backwards row works as a backwards text generator: it reverses the order of your letters but keeps them normal, so hello becomes olleh. Use it for mirror-style puzzles and wordplay, and use the Upside down row when you want the 180 degree look.
How do I flip text without reversing the order?
Use the Flipped letters, original order row. It replaces each letter with its upside-down form but keeps the left-to-right sequence, which reads oddly but looks decorative. Choose it when you want the flipped look without forcing readers to rotate the screen to read the line.
Can I flip numbers?
Yes. Digits have flipped forms or close lookalikes, and 6 and 9 swap. Some, such as 4 and 5, use unusual characters that not every font includes, so check how they display.
Can I flip emoji or non-English letters?
The mapping covers the English alphabet, digits and common punctuation. Emoji, accented letters and other scripts stay as typed, but the order of a line is still reversed in the upside down row.
Does the tool store my text?
No. Everything happens in your browser, nothing is sent to a server, and no account is needed. The box resets to Hello world when you reload, so nothing you typed is kept. There is also no account, no history and no saved list of your text.
