GST QST calculator: add or remove Quebec tax
GST 5% and QST 9.975%, both calculated on the price before tax. Estimate for information only. Not tax advice and not affiliated with Revenu Québec or the CRA. Check the official source before you file.
How do I calculate GST and QST in Quebec?
Multiply the pre-tax price by 5% for GST and by 9.975% for QST, then add both to the price. Both taxes are calculated on the same pre-tax amount, so QST is not charged on the GST. A $100 purchase carries $5.00 GST and $9.98 QST, for a total of $114.98.
The steps are the same for any amount: take the price before tax, multiply it by 0.05 for GST, multiply it by 0.09975 for QST, round each tax to the nearest cent, and add them up. The Quebec sales tax calculator above does this as you type.
| Price before tax | GST 5% | QST 9.975% | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100.00 | $5.00 | $9.98 | $114.98 |
| $500.00 | $25.00 | $49.88 | $574.88 |
| $1,000.00 | $50.00 | $99.75 | $1,149.75 |

What are the GST and QST rates?
The GST (TPS in French) is 5% and the QST (TVQ in French) is 9.975%. Together they add up to 14.975% of the pre-tax price, not an even 15%. These are the rates this tool uses, as published by the federal government and Revenu Quebec. They were last checked on October 28, 2026.
Think of the page as a Quebec tax calculator that shows both lines separately.
Quebec has two separate consumption taxes. The federal Goods and Services Tax is collected by businesses on most goods and services. The Quebec Sales Tax is the provincial tax, administered by Revenu Quebec. The two are listed as separate lines on a receipt.
Since January 1, 2013, QST has been calculated on the selling price before GST, so the taxes do not stack. That means the combined rate is the simple sum: 5% + 9.975% = 14.975%. Older articles and some websites still describe the earlier method where QST was charged on the price plus GST. That is no longer how it works.
Outside Quebec, other provinces use HST or a different mix of taxes. For those, use the GST/HST calculator for all provinces.
How does the GST QST calculator remove tax from a total?
Divide the total by 1.14975 to get the price before tax. For example, $574.88 divided by 1.14975 gives $500.00. Subtract that from the total to see the taxes paid. Switch the calculator above to Remove tax and enter the total on your receipt to do all of this automatically.
This is the reverse sales tax calculation for Quebec. You need it when you only know the final amount, for instance from a receipt or a card statement, and want to know the price before tax.
| Total with tax | Price before tax | GST | QST |
|---|---|---|---|
| $114.98 | $100.00 | $5.00 | $9.98 |
| $574.88 | $500.00 | $25.00 | $49.88 |
| $1,149.75 | $1,000.00 | $50.00 | $99.75 |
Because each tax is rounded to a cent, a few totals cannot be matched exactly by any pre-tax price. In that case the tool shows the closest one and tells you so.
Who has to charge GST and QST?
Businesses that make taxable sales must register and charge GST and QST, unless they are small suppliers. The Canada Revenue Agency defines a small supplier as having worldwide taxable revenue of $30,000 or less in a single quarter and over the last four consecutive quarters. Small suppliers may register voluntarily.
According to the CRA, a business that sells taxable goods or services in Canada generally has to register for the GST/HST, with the small supplier exception described above. Associated businesses count their revenue together. The CRA lists exceptions, such as taxi and commercial ride-sharing services, which must register even if they are small suppliers.
Revenu Quebec publishes its own page on small suppliers for QST purposes. Rules for special cases, exempt and zero-rated items, and registration timing are detailed, so confirm your situation with the official sources listed below or an accountant.
How is GST and QST rounded?
Each tax is rounded to the nearest cent, with half a cent rounded up. That is why 9.975% of $100 shows as $9.98 and not $9.975. Rounding is done per tax, so the displayed total can differ by a cent from another system that rounds the combined rate, or from a receipt with several items.
Revenu Quebec says only fractions of at least half a cent are rounded up to a cent. For several items sold together, a business may calculate the tax on the combined total before rounding. This calculator treats the amount you type as one total, so a receipt that taxes each line separately can differ by a cent or two.
Frequently asked questions
What is the combined GST and QST rate in Quebec?
The combined rate is 14.975%, made of 5% GST and 9.975% QST. Both are calculated on the price before tax, so you can multiply the pre-tax price by 1.14975 to get the total.
Is QST calculated on top of GST?
Not any more. Since 2013 QST is calculated on the selling price before GST, the same base as GST. On $100, GST is $5.00 and QST is $9.98, rather than QST being charged on $105.
What is TPS and TVQ?
TPS and TVQ are the French names for GST and QST. TPS is the federal goods and services tax at 5%, and TVQ is the Quebec sales tax at 9.975%. A TPS TVQ calculator does the same job as this one.
What is a reverse sales tax calculator Quebec shoppers can use?
It takes a total that already includes tax and works back to the price before tax. Divide the total by 1.14975, or switch this tool to Remove tax. A total of $574.88 gives $500.00 before tax, with GST and QST shown separately.
Why is the combined tax not exactly 15%?
Because the QST rate is 9.975%, not 10%. Added to the 5% GST, the combined rate is 14.975%. Rounding each tax to the cent can make a receipt look slightly different from a flat percentage.
Do I have to charge GST and QST if I earn under $30,000?
Not necessarily. Small suppliers with taxable revenue of $30,000 or less in a quarter and over four consecutive quarters are not required to register. You can still register voluntarily. Confirm with the CRA or Revenu Quebec.
Does this calculator work for the rest of Canada?
No, it only uses the Quebec rates of 5% GST and 9.975% QST. Other provinces charge HST or a different combination of taxes. Use the GST/HST calculator at /gst-hst-calculator/ for those provinces instead.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded or stored. There is no account or sign-up, and closing the tab clears the amount you entered, so you can use real receipts and totals safely.
