How does the GST HST calculator work out GST and HST?
To add GST or HST, multiply the pre-tax price by the combined rate and add the result. In Ontario, HST is 13%, so $100 becomes 100 × 1.13 = $113. Elsewhere the rate depends on the province. Pick yours in the GST HST calculator above and the tax lines appear as you type.
Canada has one federal tax, the 5% GST, and every province either adds its own tax on top or joins the federal system. Four Atlantic provinces and Ontario use a single blended HST. Need an HST calculator Ontario shoppers can use? Pick Ontario and the 13% rate applies. Alberta and the three territories charge GST only. British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec charge GST plus a separate provincial tax.
| Province | Tax lines | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Alberta | GST $5.00 | $105.00 |
| Ontario | HST $13.00 | $113.00 |
| British Columbia | GST $5.00 + PST $7.00 | $112.00 |
| Quebec | GST $5.00 + QST $9.98 | $114.98 |
Each tax line is rounded to the cent. Your receipt can differ by a cent when a store rounds the whole bill instead of each line.
What rates does the GST HST calculator use in each province?
The GST is 5% nationwide; HST is 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. British Columbia and Manitoba add 7% PST, Saskatchewan adds 6% PST, and Quebec adds 9.975% QST. Rates were checked on October 28, 2026.
| Province or territory | System | GST / HST | PST / QST | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alberta | GST only | 5% | none | 5% |
| British Columbia | GST + PST | 5% | 7% | 12% |
| Manitoba | GST + PST | 5% | 7% | 12% |
| New Brunswick | HST | 15% | none | 15% |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | HST | 15% | none | 15% |
| Northwest Territories | GST only | 5% | none | 5% |
| Nova Scotia | HST | 14% | none | 14% |
| Nunavut | GST only | 5% | none | 5% |
| Ontario | HST | 13% | none | 13% |
| Prince Edward Island | HST | 15% | none | 15% |
| Quebec | GST + QST | 5% | 9.975% | 14.975% |
| Saskatchewan | GST + PST | 5% | 6% | 11% |
| Yukon | GST only | 5% | none | 5% |
Nova Scotia cut its provincial HST portion to 9% on April 1, 2025, which lowered the total HST rate from 15% to 14%. Provincial rates are set by each province and can change, so confirm important figures on the official pages listed under Sources.
How do I remove GST or HST from a total?
To remove tax from a total, divide by one plus the combined rate; do not subtract a percentage. A $113 Ontario total divided by 1.13 gives $100.00 before tax, leaving $13.00 of HST. Subtracting 13% from $113 would wrongly give $98.31. Switch the calculator to "Remove tax" to do this automatically.
This reverse sales tax calculator mode is handy when you only have the receipt total, or when a supplier quotes a price with tax included. The tax is a share of the pre-tax price, not of the total, which is why subtracting the percentage gives the wrong answer.
| Total | Province | Working | Pre-tax price |
|---|---|---|---|
| $113.00 | Ontario | 113 ÷ 1.13 | $100.00 |
| $114.00 | Nova Scotia | 114 ÷ 1.14 | $100.00 |
| $57.49 | Quebec | 57.49 ÷ 1.14975 | $50.00 |
For Quebec, the $50.00 base carries $2.50 of GST and $4.99 of QST. If you also need a general percentage, try the percentage calculator.
How is Quebec QST calculated with GST?
In Quebec, both GST (5%) and QST (9.975%) are calculated on the price before tax, not one on top of the other. Since 2013 the QST no longer applies to the GST amount. A $100 item carries $5.00 GST and $9.98 QST, for a total of $114.98, or a combined 14.975%.
Revenu Québec describes the QST as 9.975% of the selling price excluding GST. Registers that use a single combined step apply 14.975% to the pre-tax price, which gives the same result. The calculator above shows the two lines separately so you can see the GST and the QST.

Which items have no GST or HST?
Basic groceries, most prescription drugs and some medical devices are zero-rated, so the rate is 0%, and certain services such as many health and childcare services are exempt. This calculator assumes a fully taxable item at the standard rate, so for these items use the pre-tax price as the final price.
As a sales tax calculator Canada wide, it assumes the standard rate. Restaurant meals, alcohol and accommodation can carry special provincial rates in some provinces, so check official guidance for unusual cases.
Can I use this for invoices and quotes?
Yes, as a quick estimate, but your invoice must follow your accounting rules. Choose the province where the sale is taxed (the place of supply), enter the pre-tax amount, and copy the breakdown. Registered businesses should confirm rates, rounding and place-of-supply rules with the CRA or their accountant before filing.
It works as a GST calculator Canada businesses can use for quick quotes. The Copy result button gives a short text breakdown you can paste into a quote. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
What is the GST in Canada?
The goods and services tax is a federal 5% tax on most goods and services. It applies in every province and territory. In some provinces it is combined with a provincial tax into a single HST.
What is HST and which provinces charge it?
HST is the harmonized sales tax, which combines GST and provincial tax into one rate. Ontario charges 13%, Nova Scotia 14%, and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island 15%.
How do I calculate HST in Ontario?
Multiply the pre-tax price by 0.13 to get the HST, then add it. A $80 item has $10.40 HST and costs $90.40 in total. To go the other way, divide a total by 1.13.
Is there GST on top of PST?
In British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, GST and PST are both charged on the pre-tax price, so one is not charged on the other. The same is true for Quebec GST and QST.
How do I add or remove GST on a price?
To add GST, multiply by 1.05. To remove it from a GST-inclusive total, divide by 1.05. For example, $105 divided by 1.05 is $100.00. Use the Add tax or Remove tax switch above for any province.
Can I use it as a PST calculator for BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan?
Yes. British Columbia and Manitoba charge 7% PST, and Saskatchewan charges 6%. This calculator uses those general rates. Some goods and services have different or no provincial tax, such as liquor or accommodation in BC.
Why is my total a cent different from a receipt?
This calculator rounds each tax line to the nearest cent. A store may round the combined tax or each item separately, so a cent or two of difference is normal. The Canada Revenue Agency says the same about its own calculator.
Is this calculator official tax advice?
No. It is an estimate for information only and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Canada Revenue Agency. Confirm rates and rules with the CRA or your provincial tax office before relying on a figure.
