Secret Santa generator: draw your names
Exclusions: people who must not draw each other
How do I use the Secret Santa generator?
Type or paste one name per line, press Draw names, and the Secret Santa generator gives every person exactly one gift recipient. Nobody draws themselves. Leave Private reveal ticked so each person taps Reveal to see their own match, or untick it to see the whole list at once.
A Secret Santa generator randomly gives each person in a group one other person to buy a gift for, so nobody draws themselves.
- Replace the three sample names with your group, one name per line. Two or more names are enough, but four or more makes a better game.
- Open the exclusions box only if some pairs must not draw each other, such as partners or siblings who already buy for each other.
- Press Draw names. The list shows every giver.
- With Private reveal on, pass the screen around. Each person taps Reveal next to their own name, reads who they are buying for, and taps Hide before handing it on.
Press Copy all matches if you want the full list in your clipboard, for example to keep a sealed copy in case someone forgets their match. Press Draw again for a fresh draw with the same names. The tool accepts up to 200 names. It also works as a general gift exchange generator for offices, classes and families.
How does the Secret Santa name picker keep the draw fair?
The name picker shuffles the names with your browser's cryptographic random number generator and keeps only a shuffle where nobody holds their own name and no exclusion is broken. That kind of arrangement is called a derangement. Every valid arrangement is possible, so no one can predict or influence the result.
A simple trick is to shuffle the list and shift everyone one place, but that makes the pattern predictable. This tool shuffles the whole list again and checks the result. If anyone drew themselves or an excluded person, it throws the shuffle away and tries again.
Random shuffles that pass the check turn up often. The share of arrangements where nobody keeps their own name approaches about 36.8 percent as the group grows (1 divided by e), so a valid draw usually appears within a few tries. For small groups the counts are exact: 3 people have 2 valid draws, 4 people have 9, 5 people have 44, and 6 people have 265.
| People | Valid draws |
|---|---|
| 3 | 2 |
| 4 | 9 |
| 5 | 44 |
| 6 | 265 |
When exclusions make plain shuffling unlikely to succeed, the tool switches to a matching method that finds a valid draw if one exists, and tells you plainly if none does. Randomness comes from crypto.getRandomValues, not Math.random, wherever the browser provides it.
How does Secret Santa with exclusions work for couples and family?
Yes. Open the exclusions box and write one pair per line, such as Alex + Jordan, and the draw will never match those two in either direction. Names must match the list above. You can add as many pairs as you like, and you can chain more than two names on one line.
Exclusions are two-way. If you write Alex + Jordan, Alex cannot draw Jordan and Jordan cannot draw Alex. Writing Alex + Jordan + Casey on one line keeps all three apart from each other, which suits a household where everyone buys gifts for each other anyway.
Matching is not case sensitive, so "alex" works for "Alex". If a name in the exclusions is not in the list, the tool tells you which one instead of silently ignoring it. Spelling variants are the usual cause.
Exclusions work best when the group is not tiny. With only four people, two excluded couples leave very few valid circles of gifts, and the draw may give the same result often. That is not a bug, it is all the rules allow.
How do I run a Secret Santa draw without seeing the matches?
Keep Private reveal ticked, draw, and hand the device around so each person taps Reveal on their own row. The matches are not shown on the page until someone taps, and Hide clears the line again. Nothing is emailed or stored, so the organizer sees only what they tap.
The common complaint about Secret Santa tools is that the organizer sees everything, or that you must collect everyone's email to send private links. Private reveal avoids both. Each row starts with only a name and a Reveal button. The match is not written into the page until it is tapped, and Hide removes it again.
Two practical ways to use it:
- In person: pass a phone or laptop around the room. Each person taps their own Reveal, reads, taps Hide, and passes it on.
- Remote group: let one trusted person run the draw, message each match privately, and then close the page. Nothing is kept once the tab is closed.
The organizer can still tap Reveal on any row, because the page runs on their device. If it matters that the organizer stays blind, have someone else press Draw names, or use the pass-the-device method in person.
When is a Secret Santa draw impossible?
A draw is impossible when someone is left with nobody they may draw, or when there is only one person in the group. That happens if exclusions rule out everyone else for one name, or when the remaining rules leave two people needing the same single recipient. The tool then shows a clear message.
Examples that cannot work: one name only; three people where Alex is excluded from both of the others; or two people who are both only allowed to draw the same third person, since each person can be drawn only once.
When this happens the tool shows "No valid draw exists" and does not display any result, so you never get a draw that breaks your rules. Remove one exclusion or add another person and press Draw names again.
If you are running a bigger exchange for a team, you can also pick a single winner for a raffle with the random name picker wheel, or check how many names you pasted with a word counter that counts lines.
Frequently asked questions
How many people do I need for Secret Santa?
The generator works with two or more names, but a Secret Santa is more fun and keeps the giver secret with at least four. With two people each simply buys for the other, and with three there are only two possible draws.
Can anyone draw their own name?
No. The generator only accepts a draw where every person gets someone else, which is called a derangement. If the shuffle gives anyone their own name, or breaks an exclusion, it is discarded and the names are reshuffled automatically.
How does a Secret Santa no email draw work?
It works with no emails at all. The tool does not email anyone or send links, because it never connects to a server. You draw on your own screen and share matches in person or by your own message. That is also why you need no account or sign-up.
Are my names stored or sent anywhere?
No. The names stay in your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, saved or tracked by the tool, and when you close or refresh the page the draw is gone. Copy the matches first if you need to keep them.
Can I draw again if someone drops out?
Yes. Delete the name from the list and press Draw names again for a completely new draw. Everyone who already saw a match needs to check again, because the earlier draw is replaced and may not match the new one.
What if two people have the same name?
The tool asks you to make the names different, for example by adding a last initial such as Alex R. and Alex T. Duplicate names would make the exclusions and the matches ambiguous, so they are not accepted.
How do I set a budget for the gift exchange?
Agree the spending limit with the group before the draw and send it along with the matches. This generator is kept to the draw itself and has no budget field, so it does not need personal details or a form to fill in.
Can I use this for a Kris Kringle or white elephant exchange?
Yes for Kris Kringle, which uses the same one gift per person draw. White elephant gifts are swapped in turn instead, so you do not need matches, but you can still paste names and use the name picker wheel to decide who goes first.
