Make your histogram
Hover over or tap a bar to see its range and count.
Bars use bins of equal width. A value on a bin edge goes in the upper bin, and the last bin includes the maximum. Your numbers never leave this page.
How do I create a histogram with this histogram maker?
A histogram maker turns a list of numbers into bars that show how many values fall in each range. Paste your numbers, separated by spaces, commas or new lines, and the histogram appears instantly. Forty sample scores are loaded. Leave bins on Auto, then download a PNG or SVG.
- Replace the sample scores with your own values. You can paste a column from a spreadsheet into the histogram maker.
- Check the line under Number of bins. It says which rule picked the bins.
- Hover over a bar, or tap it on a phone, to read its range and count.
- Use Download PNG for slides and documents, or Download SVG if you want sharp lines at any size.
Items that are not numbers are skipped and the tool tells you how many. Commas separate values, so write decimals with a dot, as in 3.5. This histogram generator needs at least two numbers.
How many bins should a histogram have?
There is no single right number, but a good start is the Freedman-Diaconis rule, which sets bin width to 2 times the interquartile range divided by the cube root of n. Sturges' rule, bins = ceil(log2 n) + 1, is a simpler alternative. Auto mode here uses Freedman-Diaconis and falls back to Sturges when the interquartile range is zero.
Too few bins hide the shape of your data. Too many bins make a jagged chart where each bar holds only one or two values. The two common rules give different starting points:
| Rule | Formula | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Freedman-Diaconis | width = 2 × IQR ÷ n1/3 | Skewed data or outliers |
| Sturges | bins = ceil(log2 n) + 1 | Roughly bell-shaped data, small to medium n |
Here the interquartile range uses linear interpolation between sorted values, and Auto mode caps at 50 bins. Try a few manual settings from 3 to 30 and keep the one that shows the pattern without noise. The same data can tell a different story at different widths, so state your bins if you publish the chart.
What is the difference between a histogram and a bar chart?
A histogram groups numeric values into ranges and shows how many fall in each range, so the bars touch and the x-axis is a number line. A bar chart compares separate categories, such as countries or product names. Order matters in a histogram and not in a bar chart.
If you have values like heights, scores or delivery times, you want a histogram. If you have totals per label, such as sales by region, you want a bar chart. The bars in a histogram follow the number line, so you cannot reorder them. Taller bars mean more values in that range, which is why the vertical axis here is labeled frequency.
When you also need to turn counts into shares, a percentage calculator helps with the arithmetic. For marks, you can combine this tool with the grade calculator.
How do I download a chart from the histogram maker?
Press Download PNG for a 1280 by 720 image, or Download SVG for a vector file. Both are made in your browser and contain the chart, axis labels and tick values. Nothing is uploaded, and the files carry no watermark.
Every histogram maker needs a way to export, so PNG works almost everywhere, including slides, documents and chat apps. SVG stays sharp when scaled and can be edited in vector tools. If your browser cannot create a PNG, the page shows a message and SVG still works. The chart has a white background so it looks right on any slide. There is also a button that copies the bin ranges and counts as tab-separated text, ready to paste into a spreadsheet.
What does the histogram calculator show with n, mean and median?
n is how many valid numbers you entered. The mean is their average, and the median is the middle value when they are sorted. If the mean sits far from the median, your data is probably skewed or has outliers. Min and max show the full range the bins cover.
In the histogram maker, with the sample scores, the mean and the median are close, which fits a fairly even, bell-like spread. With the Skewed example, a few large values pull the mean well above the median. That gap is a quick check before you choose which average to report.
- n: count of values used (items that are not numbers are left out).
- Mean: sum divided by n.
- Median: the middle value, or the average of the two middle values when n is even.
- Min and Max: smallest and largest value.
Values are shown with up to four decimals. For text rather than numbers, a word counter is the right tool.
Frequently asked questions
Is this histogram generator free?
Yes. It is free with no daily limit, no watermark on downloads and no premium tier. Paste your numbers, adjust the bins if you want, and save the chart as PNG or SVG whenever you need it.
Do I need to sign up?
No. There is no account, no email box and no pop-up. The histogram is drawn in your browser the moment you open the page and each time you change the numbers.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated and drawn inside your browser tab. Your numbers are not sent to a server, saved or tracked, and they disappear when you close or reload the page.
What number formats can I paste?
Whole numbers, decimals with a dot, negative numbers and scientific notation such as 1.5e3. Separate values with spaces, commas, semicolons, tabs or new lines. Anything else is skipped and counted in the message.
How many numbers can I use?
Up to 100,000 values are used. That is far more than a typical class or survey, and the chart still draws instantly. If you paste more, only the first 100,000 are used.
Why does my histogram look different with other bins?
Bins decide where values are grouped. Narrow bins show detail and noise, wide bins smooth the shape and can hide gaps. Both are correct views of the same data, so try several widths before choosing.
Can I save the histogram as an image?
Yes. Download PNG gives a 1280 by 720 picture with a white background. Download SVG gives a vector file you can scale or edit. Both include the axis labels, tick values and bars.
How do I create a histogram in Excel or Google Sheets?
Select your data column, insert a chart and choose the histogram type, then set the bin width in the chart options. If you only need a quick picture, copy the column and paste it into this page instead.
