What are the new Army weight standards?

The Army standard is a waist-to-height ratio below 0.55. Under Army Directive 2026-13, announced July 7, 2026, a Soldier's waist at the navel is divided by height in inches, and the result must be less than, not equal to, 0.55. Soldiers are measured twice per calendar year.

This replaced the older approach of a height and weight screening table, followed by a tape test for anyone over the table weight. Now there is one number. A 70-inch Soldier passes with a waist below 38.5 inches. A 64-inch Soldier passes below 35.2 inches.

The ratio applies to Soldiers regardless of fitness test scores. Pregnant and postpartum Soldiers keep their medical exemptions, according to press coverage of the directive.

Checked October 28, 2026 against army.mil articles. We could not open the directive PDF itself, so treat details beyond those articles as unconfirmed.

How do I use the Army height and weight calculator?

Enter your height and your waist measured at the navel, in inches or centimeters. The result updates as you type: pass or fail against 0.55, your ratio, the largest waist that passes at your height and how much room you have. Sex, age and weight are not needed.

Type height as inches (70) or feet and inches (5'10). Switch the unit selector to centimeters if you measure in metric; your numbers convert automatically. If you fail, the tool shows how many inches over the limit your waist is.

Worked example

Height 68 inches, waist 40 inches: 40 ÷ 68 = 0.588, which is above 0.55. The largest passing waist at 68 inches is 0.55 × 68 = 37.4 inches, so this waist is 2.6 inches over.

Looking for related math? The percentage calculator can check ratio changes, though the Army only uses the ratio itself.

What happened to the Army height and weight tables and tape test?

The Army replaced the height and weight tables, the circumference-based tape test and supplemental body fat assessments with the waist-to-height ratio. The change was announced July 7, 2026. That is why this calculator has no age, sex, weight, neck or hip fields: the current standard does not use them.

Many "army body fat calculator" and "army tape test calculator" pages still describe the previous system, with neck, waist and hip formulas and age-based body fat limits. Those figures belong to the retired method. This page deliberately leaves them out rather than show numbers that no longer decide anything.

How is waist measured for the Army waist-to-height ratio?

The Army measures the waist at the navel and divides it by height in inches. Army articles confirm that landmark and that NCOs receive certified training on taping. Details such as posture, breathing and exact rounding were not in the sources we could read, so follow your unit's measurement team.

Some secondary sites say the tape is read at the end of a relaxed exhale and that the ratio is recorded to three decimals. We could not confirm either from an official page, so this calculator does not depend on them. It does flag any result within 0.005 of the cutoff as borderline.

For a practical self-check, measure bare skin or a thin layer, with the tape level and snug but not squeezing, and measure twice. Your official number is the one taken by your unit.

What happens if I fail the Army waist-to-height ratio?

A ratio of 0.55 or higher triggers a confirmation measurement by another team on the same duty day. A Soldier who fails both is flagged and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program. No separation actions occur during the initial 180-day assessment period.

Commanders can also order a diagnostic measurement at any time. Army guidance describes diagnostic screenings as nonpunitive: they do not create a flag or enrollment. If your result is near 0.55, the Army recommends talking to your unit Master Fitness Trainer and a registered dietitian.

After the 180-day assessment, the Army says further guidance will follow, so check your chain of command for current consequences.

Army waist to height ratio calculator: what is the maximum waist for my height?

Multiply your height in inches by 0.55; your waist must be below that number. At 70 inches the limit is 38.5 inches, so 38.4 passes and 38.5 does not. The calculator above does this for any height and also converts to centimeters.

Waist must be below this value (0.55 × height)
HeightWaist below (in)Waist below (cm)
60 in (5'0)33.083.8
62 in (5'2)34.186.6
64 in (5'4)35.289.4
66 in (5'6)36.392.2
68 in (5'8)37.495.0
70 in (5'10)38.597.8
72 in (6'0)39.6100.6
74 in (6'2)40.7103.4
76 in (6'4)41.8106.2

Values are exact products of 0.55 and height. The standard is strictly below, so a waist equal to the table value does not pass.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Army waist-to-height ratio standard?

A Soldier's waist at the navel divided by height in inches must be less than 0.55. A ratio exactly at 0.55 does not meet the standard. The rule is in Army Directive 2026-13, announced July 7, 2026.

Is there a new Army height and weight calculator for 2026?

Yes. This is a new Army height and weight calculator 2026 edition, built on the waist-to-height ratio that replaced the height and weight screening tables in July 2026. It needs only height and waist, with no age, sex or weight.

Does the Army still use the tape test?

The circumference-based tape test using neck, waist and hip was replaced by the waist-to-height ratio. Only a navel-level waist measurement and height are used now, so a neck or hip measurement is not needed.

Does the Army body fat calculator still apply?

Not for the official standard. Body fat percentage estimates by age and sex came from the previous program. The current pass mark is the ratio of waist to height, below 0.55, with no body fat figure required.

How often are Soldiers measured?

Army articles say all Soldiers receive a waist-to-height assessment twice per calendar year. Commanders may also direct a diagnostic measurement at any time if they suspect a Soldier does not meet the standard.

Can a Soldier be separated for failing?

Not during the initial 180-day assessment period. Soldiers who fail twice are flagged and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program. The Army said further guidance would follow that assessment, so ask your command for current rules.

Do Army weight standards change by age or sex?

In the sources we read, the standard is a single 0.55 ratio with no age or sex adjustment. Other services differ, for example the Marine Corps uses 0.52 according to press reports, so this tool applies only to the Army.

Is this calculator official?

No. It is an unofficial estimate and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the US Army or the Department of Defense. Your unit measurement of record decides your result. Check the current directive and ask your unit team.
