What is lorem ipsum, and what does a lorem ipsum generator do?

Lorem ipsum is placeholder text used by designers, developers and publishers to show how a layout will look before the real copy exists. It is scrambled Latin that resembles ordinary text in word length and rhythm, but it has no meaning, so readers focus on the design instead of the words.

When a page mockup is filled with real sentences, people start reading and critiquing the message. When it is filled with a repeated phrase such as "text goes here", the layout looks fake and uneven. Lorem ipsum sits between the two: it looks like a natural paragraph, with mixed word lengths and sentence breaks, yet nobody is tempted to proofread it.

You will see it in website templates, theme demos, print layouts, slide decks, font specimens and app prototypes. Use this lorem ipsum generator when you need a quick block of placeholder text with a chosen length. If you also need to check how long your final copy is, a word counter does that in a second.

Where does lorem ipsum come from?

Lorem ipsum comes from a passage in "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a Latin work by Cicero written in 45 BC. The words were cut up and altered, and the text spread through Letraset transfer sheets from 1966 and later through desktop publishing software.

The source is a philosophical essay by the Roman writer Cicero on what makes a good life. The familiar opening comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33, where the original Latin phrase dolorem ipsum (pain itself) was clipped to lorem ipsum. Other words were changed, added or dropped along the way, which is why scholars describe the result as nonsense Latin rather than a faithful quotation.

Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College, is credited with tracing the text to Cicero. He published the finding in a 1994 letter after looking up the word consectetur. Before that, the origin was largely forgotten even though the text was everywhere.

The text became a standard in the 1960s, when Letraset sold dry-transfer lettering sheets that carried it, and the lipsum.com history notes a 1966 start for that use. It then moved into digital layout tools and word processors, and later into web design. English translations of the original Latin, such as the 1914 Loeb edition by H. Rackham, are public domain.

The word list in this tool is built from words that appear in the standard lorem ipsum passage and in Cicero's original Latin. The sentences are assembled by this page at random, so each click gives different text.

How does the lorem ipsum generator make lorem ipsum paragraphs, sentences or words?

Type a number in the box, pick Paragraphs, Sentences or Words, and the placeholder text appears instantly. Click Copy text to put it on your clipboard. Leave the "Start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" box ticked for the classic opening, or untick it for fully random text.

  1. Enter how many you want. The default is 5 paragraphs.
  2. Choose the unit: lorem ipsum paragraphs, sentences or lorem ipsum words.
  3. Click Copy text and paste it into your design tool, editor or code.
  4. Click Generate new text if you want a different variation of the same size.

The tool makes up to 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences or 10,000 words in one go. A paragraph here has four to seven sentences, and each sentence has eight to sixteen words, which is close to typical body copy. Nothing you generate is sent anywhere, because all of it is built in your browser.

How much placeholder text do I need?

Match the amount to the real content you expect: about 15 to 25 words for a card description, 3 to 5 sentences for a short paragraph, and 3 to 6 paragraphs for an article page. Using realistic lengths shows whether the layout holds up when the real copy arrives.

Suggested amounts for common layout elements
ElementSetting to use
Headline or button label3 to 8 words
Card or product description15 to 30 words
Intro paragraph2 to 3 sentences
Blog or article page4 to 8 paragraphs
Long form or print spread10 or more paragraphs

As a placeholder text generator, the tool only supplies the text; these amounts are working guidelines, not rules. A good habit is to test the shortest and the longest text your design might receive. Text that is much longer than your mockup can break a card, while a one-line title may leave an odd gap.

Need to match an exact length? Generate a slightly larger block of words, paste it into a word counter, and trim.

Can I get lorem ipsum as HTML?

Yes. Open "HTML options" under the result and choose paragraph tags or a bulleted list, and the generator wraps the text in p tags or ul and li tags for you. With paragraphs selected, each paragraph gets its own p tag. The default is plain text without any markup.

This lorem ipsum generator keeps the HTML option hidden by default to keep the tool simple. Paragraph tags are useful for pasting straight into a page template or a CMS code view. The list option puts each paragraph, or each sentence if you chose sentences, inside its own li element, which helps when you are testing navigation, feature lists or footers.

The text is plain placeholder content with no links, scripts or styles, so it is safe to paste anywhere. If you later need to swap words across a whole template, a find and replace tool can do it in bulk.

Should I leave lorem ipsum on a live website?

No. Replace all lorem ipsum with real content before a page goes live, because placeholder text looks unfinished to visitors and gives search engines nothing useful to index. Search your site for "lorem ipsum" before launch to catch leftover blocks in templates, footers and image captions.

Leftover placeholder text is one of the most common launch mistakes. A quick site search or a find in your code editor for "lorem" and "ipsum" takes seconds and catches most of it. Check hidden places too, such as meta descriptions, alt text, empty states and email templates.

Frequently asked questions

What does lorem ipsum mean?

Lorem ipsum has no real meaning. It is scrambled Latin derived from a passage in Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum". The first two words come from a clipped form of "dolorem ipsum", which means "pain itself", but the full text does not form coherent sentences.

Is lorem ipsum real Latin?

Partly. Many of its words are real Latin, and the text comes from Cicero, but words were altered, added and removed. As a result it is not proper Latin and does not read as a meaningful passage. It only mimics the look of normal text.

Who invented lorem ipsum?

No single person is known to have invented it. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor, traced the text to Cicero's writing in 1994. Letraset used a version of it on transfer sheets in the 1960s, and desktop publishing software spread it further.

Is this dummy text generator free to use?

Yes. Cicero's Latin text is in the public domain, and the sentences produced by this generator are assembled by the page itself, so you can use them in any personal or commercial project without credit or a license.

How do I start the text with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet?

Keep the "Start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" box ticked. The first paragraph or sentence then opens with the classic line, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit." Untick the box to get completely random text from the first word.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. This generator builds the text in your browser using JavaScript and does not send anything to a server or store what you create. It also works without an account, and you do not need to sign up for anything.

How many words are in a lorem ipsum paragraph here?

A paragraph from this tool has four to seven sentences of eight to sixteen words each, so usually between 30 and 110 words, averaging about 65. The word count and character count are shown below the result for whatever you generate.

Should I leave lorem ipsum on a live website?

No. Replace placeholder text with real content before launch. Visitors read leftover lorem ipsum as an unfinished site, and it adds nothing useful for search. Search your pages and templates for the word "lorem" before publishing to catch anything you missed.
